The summer vacation for the Supreme Court ends today with the Court re-opening tomorrow after a six-week long summer vacation. The vacation lasted for 42 days from May 21 to July 1..The Court is expected to deliver judgements in ten cases on the reopening day one of which is the PIL filed against the appointment of KV Chowdhary as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC)..This PIL filed by the NGO Common Cause was heard by Justice Arun Mishra and Justice M Shantanagoudar and this Bench had reserved the judgement in this case in September last year..The petition which challenges the appointment of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, Chowdhary and Vigilance Commissioner TM Bhasin, contends that the appointments are arbitrary and violate the principles of institutional integrity. It was also alleged by the petitioners that Chowdhary had influenced the investigation against businessman Ponty Chaddha. The judgement in this case will be pronounced in Court no. 8..Further, as many as 17 Public Interest Litigation matters are listed to be heard tomorrow. Six of them are before the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra..The re-opening week will also mark Justice AK Goel’s retirement. Justice Goel will demit office on July 6, five days after the Court reopens. Justice AK Goel is one of the two Judges along with Justice UU Lalit who is hearing the review petition in the SC/ST case.
