Supreme Court lawyers Bansuri Swaraj, Haris Beeran become Members of Parliament

Two Supreme Court lawyers have become Members of Parliament (MPs) after the recently concluded general elections. .Advocate Bansuri Swaraj of Bharatiya Janata Party was elected to the Lok Sabha from the New Delhi constituency while advocate Haris Beeran of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Kerala. Beeran is a native of Aluva in Ernakulam district. He completed his schooling at Rajagiri School in Kalamassery and pursued his undergraduate education at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam. He earned his law degree from Government Law College, Ernakulam. Since 1998, he has been practicing before the Supreme Court. He started his practice with Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave and has served as the Chairman of the National Lawyers Forum. During the UPA government, he served as the counsel for the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Environment.He is the son of VK Beeran, former Additional Advocate General of Kerala.Some of the important matters he has appeared/ assisted in are the CAA - NRC case, the Hijab ban case, the Hadia case, journalist Siddique Kappan's case, the Italian Marines case and cases regarding caste census, economic reservation and voting rights of non-resident Indians. .Swaraj is the daughter of late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj. She enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2007 and had been practicing law in Supreme Court till she entered the political fray. She also held the office of Additional Advocate General of Haryana while carrying out her private practice. Among others, she has appeared in cases concerning Lalit Modi and the Chandigarh mayoral candidate who was recently disqualified by the Supreme Court.
