The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed with costs a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking re-classification of the caste system in India. [Sachin Gupta v. UOI].A Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud remarked that such PILs are an abuse of court process and initially proposed to impose ₹1 lakh costs.Eventually, the Court dismissed it and ordered the petitioner, advocate Sachin Gupta to pay costs of ₹25,000 to the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA)."This PIL is abuse of the process of court. We dismiss it and direct a payment of Rs 25,000 cost to the Supreme Court Bar Association," the Court ordered.Another PIL filed by the same petitioner seeking phasing out of reservation was also dismissed by the top court on Tuesday with ₹25,000 costs.
