A day after he was arrested in Coimbatore, Justice CS Karnan has been denied bail by a vacation Bench of the Supreme Court..Mathews Nedumpara appeared before a Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul today, also seeking a suspension of the sentence imposed on Karnan J. The Bench, however, was in no mood to grant any sort of relief to the beleaguered judge. It stated,.“The orders were passed by a bench of 7 judges and we cannot do anything, neither do we intend to do so.”.The judges also asked Nedumpara to approach the Bench that imposed the sentence on his client and said that they could not override the order during the vacation..Nedumpara then proceeded to urge the Bench to grant Karnan J bail, saying,.“Your Lordships have jurisdiction. Even a Magistrate can grant bail.”.However, the Bench remained unmoved and refused to interfere with the order of the 7-judge Bench..The Supreme Court had sentenced Karnan J to six months imprisonment for contempt of court back in May. The judge then led the Kolkata police on a wild goose chase before retiring in hiding. It was only yesterday that the police were able to track his whereabouts and take him into custody..Image of Justice Kaul taken from here.
