The Supreme Court today directed the CRPF to take over the security of Irom Chitra Devi’s family.
The bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, L Nageshwar Rao and Navin Sinha was hearing the petition filed by Irom Chitra Devi, seeking protection to her family after her son, Irom Roger, was allegedly killed in 2011 in a road rage case by the son of the Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
The Advocate General for State of Manipur submitted before the bench that adequate security has been provided to the family by the state.
The petitioner also submitted that one of the petitioners, who is a lawyer based out of Chandigarh, is also receiving death threats.
The Advocate General submitted that they have provided adequate security to the family and the petitioners, to which the Bench observed that the Court will provide adequate security too.
“We are all one in providing security to the petitioner.”
The Bench then directed the CRPF to take over the security of the family and directed the IG, Manipur & Nagaland zone to prepare an assessment report and present it before the Court.
It further directed that adequate and proper security is provided to the petitioners and to ensure that no harm whatsover is caused to them.
The Bench has also directed the Chandigarh police to provide security to the lawyer based out of Chandigarh. It has also directed the State Police of Manipur to withdraw security once CRPF takes over.
The Bench will monitor the security from time to time.
