The Supreme Court has constituted two five-judge Constitution benches for Tuesday to deal with 8 cases of Constitutional importance. .The first Constitution bench comprises of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, S Ravindra Bhat, Bela M Trivedi and JB Pardiwala..This bench will hear the following four cases:.1. Whether Muslims, as a community, can be declared socially and educationally backward for the purpose of Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution?2. Petition seeks quashing of notification declaring Sikh Educational institutions in the State of Punjab to be ‘minority’ thereby permitting them to reserve 50 percent seats for the members of Sikh Community3. Plea regarding demand for Courts of Appeal with exclusive jurisdiction to hear and finally decide appeals from High Courts?4. Plea challenging current system for appointing members of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the ground that Executive enjoys the power to make appointments..The second constitution bench comprises of Justices Indira Banerjee, Hemant Gupta, Surya Kant, MM Sundresh and Sudhanshu Dhulia..This bench will hear the following cases:.1. Plea regarding whether the criteria for selection can be altered by the authorities concerned in the middle or after the process of selection has started.2. Case relating to the doctrine of precedent with respect to Supreme Court judgments.3. Challenge to the prevalent practice of polygamy including Nikah Halala, Nikah Mutah and Nikah Misyar.4.
