The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended that Advocate Sreeja Vijayalakshmi be appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court..The Collegium had last month deferred its consideration of the High Court Collegium recommendation for Vijayalakshmi's appointment in view of certain inputs from the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice. Following a clarification from the High Court Collegium, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai said,"We have scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record, including the report dated 21 March 2024 of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala. The Collegium, therefore, is of the considered view that Smt Sreeja Vijayalakshmi is fit and suitable for appointment as Judge of the High Court of Kerala.".The High Court Collegium had recommended Vijayalakshmi's name for judgeship in December 2023. Last month, the Supreme Court Collegium had sought a report from the High Court Collegium "in light of the inputs placed by the Department of Justice in the file".On March 21, the High Court Chief Justice forwarded his report after consulting with other members of the Collegium and gave a green signal for Vijayalakshmi's appointment as a judge. The High Court Collegium had also heard Vijayalakshmi to assess her performance. Following the submission of the report by High Court Collegium, the Supreme Court Collegium said,"The inputs which have been furnished by the Department of Justice in the file have been duly considered by the Collegium of the High Court in pursuance of the earlier resolution of the Collegium of the Supreme Court. Bearing in mind the clarification which has been issued by the Collegium of the High Court, we are of the view that there is no reason to reject the view which has been formed by the Collegium of the High Court.".[Read Collegium Resolution]
