The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday recommended the appointment of five lawyers as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court..The Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna recommended the names of following advocates:(i) Harmeet Singh Grewal;(ii) Deepinder Singh Nalwa;(iii) Sumeet Goel;(iv) Sudeepti Sharma;(v) Kirti Singh..The High Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of the five advocates on April 21. The Chief Ministers and the Governors of Punjab and Haryana subsequently concurred with the recommendation, the Collegium said in the resolution dated October 17..While there was nothing adverse in the records against four of the advocates, the Department of Justice indicated that financial integrity of advocate Deepinder Singh Nalwa was not considered above board. In January 2019, Nalwa's name had been remitted to the High Court. However, while recommending Nalwa's name this time, the Collegium in respect to allegations about his financial integrity said:"These inputs are vague and the Government in this regard has fairly stated that there is nothing on record to substantiate these adverse inputs."In respect of two other lawyers, one of the consultee judges had not offered any opinion, the resolution revealed.However, considering the overall record, the Collegium recommended the names of all the five lawyers as it considered them fit and suitable for appointment.[Read Resolution]
