The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday recommended the appointment of five additional judges of the Calcutta High Court as permanent judges and also extended the tenure of one additional judge by one year..While four of the five judges recommended to be made permanent will continue to remain in the Calcutta High Court, the Collegium recommended the transfer of Justice Lapita Banerji to the Punjab & Haryana High Court.In two separate resolutions on Thursday, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai recommended the following judges for permanent appointment: - Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay- Justice Rai Chattopadhyay - Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul)- Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury- Justice Lapita Banerji.Four of these five judges are women..The Collegium in July 2023 had deferred the proposals received from the Calcutta High Court Collegium for permanent appointment of the six additional judges as permanent judges of the High Court.Among the six judges, the proposal for permanent appointment of Justice Subhendu Samanta was also deferred.
