The Supreme Court today bid farewell to Justice Aftab Alam marking the end of his five and a half year tenure at the Supreme Court..The farewell ceremony, organised in the Supreme Court lawns by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), was attended by the Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir, Attorney General Goolam E. Vahanvati and SCBA President M.N. Krishnamani among others..Speaking on the occasion, Vahanvati said that Alam’s judgments in Ajmal Kasab’s case, Haj subsidy matter and Novartis case deserved special mention with all these judgments being applauded by all and sundry. Krishnamani in his speech called him a man of compassion and requested him to contribute to law by taking up teaching in national law schools which currently lacked good faculty. Chief Justice Altamas Kabir also commended him for the judgment delivered by him in Novartis case..Justice Alam in his speech said that his five and a half year tenure in the Supreme Court was easily the best learning experience in his life. He expressed his appreciation for the system of amicus curiae prevalent in the Supreme Court but said that both the Bench and the Bar were a bit too hierarchical. He also pointed out that the system of Special Leave Petitions was creating a huge burden on the Court and that it was even affecting the quality of the judgments..Justice Alam enrolled as an Advocate on March 27, 1973. He practised in the Patna High Court and was designated as Senior Advocate by the Patna High Court on February 1, 1984. He was appointed as Judge of the Patna High Court on July 27, 1990 and was later transferred to the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, where he was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice on June 06, 2007.
