A Supreme Court bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli sat till 9.10 pm today to hear cases..The bench had assembled at 10.30 am and decided to sit late into the evening to hear all cases listed before it today.The normal working hours of the Court is from 10.30 am to 4 pm. The Court will be shut for Dussehra vacation next week and today was the last working day before the same.Before rising, the bench proceeded to thank the lawyers and the court staff."Happy holidays everyone. We are very happy that we could hear you all. Thankful to our patient court staff. We thank all our staff -all peons, all staff, Chetan ji, Saroj ji. Thank you," the bench remarked.One of the counsel also commended the bench."Your lordships are setting an example for younger members of the bar." .Last month, another Supreme Court bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud and also comprising Justice AS Bopanna had sat beyond normal court hours to hear cases..Justice Chandrachud had recently also called for a change in the way lawyers work in the Supreme Court, asking them to realise that the Court's time is valuable."Lawyers complain that matters are not listed, but seek adjournment when their cases come up," the judge stated, adding that adjournment can be sought only on account of COVID-19 or a bereavement in the family, and not otherwise.The judge made the remark when a lawyer appearing before him sought adjournment in a case.
