States empowered to confer minority status on Hindus: Central govt to Supreme Court
The Central government submitted that the power of State governments to declare linguistic or religious communities as 'minorities' is not taken away by the National Commission for Minorities Act of 1992.
The Central government has told the Supreme Court that Hindus, Jews, and Bahai followers who are minorities in certain States, can be so declared by the concerned State government [Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay v. Union of India].
