The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India R M Lodha will most likely meet this week (Thursday or Friday) to consider the names of Senior Advocates Arvind Datar and UU Lalit for appointment as Supreme Court judges..According to reliable sources, Senior Advocate Arvind Datar has given his consent (oral) to be appointed as Supreme Court judge. As reported earlier, Senior Advocate UU Lalit has also given his consent. The collegium will now meet to pass a resolution on these appointments..If these two appointments go through, Datar and Lalit will be two other members of the Bar to join Rohinton Nariman on the Bench after Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium withdrew his consent..The CJI is yet to administer oath to Senior Advocate Rohinton Nariman and Justices Adarsh Goel and Arun Misra, whose names have been cleared for appointment as Supreme Court judges..Yesterday, at Justice BS Chauhan’s farewell CJI had expressed his disappointment over the conduct of Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium. Confirming that the Collegium has withdrawn Subramanium’s name after receiving his letter on June 29, Justice Lodha assured and promised “1.2 billion people of this country that there will be no compromise on the independence of judiciary.”
