The Supreme Court today took a stand that might be a bitter pill to swallow for Sahara Chief Subrata Roy..A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra, Ranjan Gogoi and AK Sikri refused to grant any extension to the corporate honcho for the deposit of 600 crore that was mandated by the court’s previous order, ending what Justice Misra called “indulgence” being granted to the Sahara head..The hearing itself was marked by a sense of hostility; barely moments into it, Justice Misra hinted at the fate that awaited Subrata Roy should he default in the deposit. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared for Subrata Roy, did not take too kindly to this. He said,.“So I have no right to be heard? Your Lordships have already decided… This is most unfortunate.”.A stunned Justice Gogoi lashed out by remarking,.“Mr. Sibal, do you have any idea how many man days of the Court have been taken up by this one matter? Is there even one other litigant that can claim the same level of indulgence as we have given your client?”.Sibal mellowed down considerably after the retort. However, he continued to insist in vain, as it turned out, that the present state of the economy did not allow him to find a buyer for his properties..At the end of the submissions, the Bench only curtly remarked that it “would not be granting any extension” and passed an order to that effect..Senior Advocate Arvind Datar appeared for SEBI, while Senior Advocate Shekhar Naphade was Amicus Curiae..Images of Justices Misra and Gogoi taken from the Supreme Court’s annual report.
