SC Road Safety Committee directs 3 months license suspension for Traffic Violation

The Committee constituted by the Supreme Court of India to monitor and measure implementation of road safety laws in the country has issued a slew of directions to the States and Union Territories regarding action to be taken against violators of traffic rules..As per the directions of the Committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice KS Radhakrishnan, the following acts will lead to suspension of driving license for a minimum period of 3 months:.Over-speedingDriving under the influence of alcohol or drugsRed light jumpingCarrying overload in goods carriages and carrying persons in goods carriagesUsing mobile phone while driving.The Committee has further directed that in case of driving a vehicle under the influence of drinks or drugs, the police should prosecute the offender and seek imprisonment as prescribed under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 even for the first offence..Further, the Committee has directed for strict implementation of helmet laws. It has directed that helmet laws should be applicable for both for main riders and the pillion riders. In case the law relating to the use of helmet is violated by either the main rider or the pillion rider, they will both be subject to Road Safety Education and Counselling for a minimum of 2 hours and will also be liable to pay fine as prescribed under the Act. The same sanction has been prescribed for violation of seat belt laws..The Committee has also directed the States and UTs to submit Action Taken Reports at the end of every 3 months starting from September 1, 2015.
