The Apex Court of the country has released its pendency figures (as of 1st July, 2014) with 65, 970 cases pending for adjudication..Out of these, constitutional matters number 148 or 0.22% of the total pending cases..Total Pending Matters versus Constitutional Matters.The percentage of pending constitutional matters does not cross the 0.1% mark over the course of first six months of the year 2014. As reported last year, it would appear that the apex court is still struggling with the time and resources required to hear cases before a Constitution Bench..Percentage of Referral Matters in Total Pending Matters.The total number of referred matters that are pending are higher than the constitutional Bench matters. In terms of percentages, pending referred matters constitute 0.23% of the total pending matters in January 2014. In the month of March and April, the percentage remains almost the same at 0.23% before it starts falling slightly. As with the statistics on pending constitutional matters the number of referred matters has also shown a slight decrease over time..Overall change in pending matters (Monthly).While the first two months of the year saw an increase in a number of cases, the subsequent three months were not as successful. The overall pendency saw an increase of 688 after the first month, and a further increase of 43 by the end of February, 2014. However, the next three months saw a significant decrease in the overall number of pending cases, with a total of 2,549 cases being reduced from the pendency figures..These figures come at a time when Chief Justice RM Lodha has suggested a number of measures to tackle the caseload, including having courts function for 365 days a year. A few days back, Justice Lodha had, while presiding a Constitution Bench, sought the assistance of the Bar to help reduce the backlog.
