The Supreme Court today put its foot down again and rebuked different High Courts and States for the lackadaisical approach with regard to the appointment of judges to subordinate judiciary and providing infrastructure for courts and judges..The Bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi was particularly critical of the States of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and West Bengal..Noting that there are 1000 vacancies in lower courts in Uttar Pradesh, CJI Gogoi remarked that.“We are going to ensure that these 1000 posts are filled up.”.The Bench was also critical of the lack of infrastructure for the judiciary but took note of the undertaking by the Uttar Pradesh government that it is committed to providing adequate infrastructure for the judiciary..Delhi and West Bengal also bore the brunt of the Court..Noting the lack of infrastructure and staff for the judiciary in West Bengal, CJI Gogoi said that the Court will summon Chief Secretary if the need arises..“We will get Chief Secretary and pin him down. The State government should tell us when it will provide courtrooms, residential houses for judges and support staff. Is it not the duty of the State to provide houses to judges?“.Delhi High Court and State Government were also at the receiving end of the Court..The Court was critical of the fact that there are 201 vacancies in Delhi but the recruitment process is ongoing only with respect to 100 posts..This, the High Court Registrar General told was due to the lack of infrastructure..The Court pulled up the State government for the same. The State government had filed an affidavit setting out a timeline of 3 years for completion of certain court buildings. However, CJI Gogoi remarked that they cannot wait for 3 years..The Court was also critical of the High Court for the time gap in initiating the recruitment process of candidates..Of the 100 posts for which recruitment is ongoing, 50 posts were advertised earlier this year..However, there was a time gap of nearly a year before the next 50 posts were advertised. The same was done only yesterday..“So you advertised yesterday and are telling us today. You are a judicial officer, are you not. This is your family too“, CJI Gogoi told the Registrar General of Delhi High Court..The Court has also given detailed directions to the States of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Delhi..The hearing with respect to the North-East States is progressing.
