The committee will look into issues plaguing Indian prisons, including overcrowding and lack of basic living conditions..The said committee will receive assistance from government officials, and will be required to file its reports before the Supreme Court from time to time..The Court had earlier observed that the shocking level of overcrowding in Indian prisons was a violation of fundamental rights of the inmates..Earlier this year, the Court had also set up a panel to identify the issues that plagued Indian prisons. These directions were made in a PIL registered by the Supreme Court in 2013 subsequent to a letter by former Chief Justice of India, RC Lahoti.
