The Calcutta High Court will hear tomorrow (August 13) a batch of petitions concerning the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the RG Kar Medical College campus in Kolkata..At least three pleas have been filed in the matter which was mentioned before a Bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya today.A lawyer representing a petitioner also informed the Court that the victim's surathal report (police inquest report) had been made public, revealing her name. Urgent directions are therefore required to remove her name from media reports, the Court was told. "This incident appears to be a cover-up. I will be placing various points with regard to the faulty investigation that has carried on till date...We need the Court to issue direction to expunge her name from all social media...the investigation is faulty," the counsel said. After hearing the counsel, the Bench decided to hear all the pleas tomorrow..According to reports, the victim was a second-year postgraduate medical student. She was found dead under suspicious circumstances, partially clothed, in the seminar hall of the hospital’s respiratory medicine department. Preliminary autopsy reports revealed that the woman doctor had been sexually abused before being killed. Following a preliminary investigation, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer who worked with the local police force. The incident sparked outrage within the medical community, leading to urgent calls for action to ensure the safety and security of doctors."We demand that the authorities act with precision and in time of 48 hours failing which IMA will be constrained to initiate nationwide action. A fair, transparent and time-sensitive criminal investigation is in order. An ultimatum of two days is given to arrest culprits otherwise IMA will take nationwide protests," an August 10 statement issued by the Indian Medical Association stated.
