The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has started the process to amend the Registration of Press and Periodicals Bill, 2019 to include "news on digital media" within its ambit, NDTV reported..The Bill will replace the British-era Press and Registration of Books Act that regulates newspapers and printing presses in India, and will be the first regulation on digital news media..As per reports, the Bill is yet to be approved by the Prime Minister's Office and other stakeholders..Digital news publishers will be required to apply for registration within 90 days of the law coming into effect. The same will be done with the Press Registrar General, who will have the power to act against publications for violations. The Registrar can also suspend or cancel registrations and impose penalties.It has also been reported that an appellate board will be constituted with the Chairperson of the Press Council of India as its chief..The Bill is likely to be tabled during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, which commences on July 18.
