Punjab and Haryana High Court initiates suo motu PIL after man kills himself at Golden Temple

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday took suo motu cognisance of an incident where a man shot himself dead with a firearm he snatched from a personal security officer (PSO) who was escorting a sitting judge of the High Court at Amritsar's Golden Temple.

The Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal called it a security lapse and directed the Director General of Police, Punjab to remain present before it on Wednesday via video conferencing.

The Court took notice of the matter on the basis of news items published on September 22.

According to a report carried by the Hindustan Times, the gun with which the identified man shot himself dead belonged to an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) who was accompanying a judge who had come to pay respects at the Golden Temple.

The bullets pierced into his head and he died on the spot. The police took the body to a hospital,” police officer told the daily.

Additional Advocate General Saurav Khurana represented the State of Punjab and was asked to seek instructions in the matter.
