The Madras High Court today took serious note of arrests being made by the police from court rooms, at the cost of disrupting court proceedings..On coming to know of such an incident having occurred in a Magistrate’s court, Chief Justice Indira Banerjee remarked that she will be taking contempt action against the errant officers..The Chief Justice raised the issue with Government Pleader, TN Rajagopalan, who was present in Court in the afternoon..The circumstances leading to the arrest by the police are not clear. However, it appears that certain police officers disrupted proceedings in the Magistrate’s court to make the arrest..As per the oral observations made by Chief Justice Banerjee, court proceedings in the Magistrate court were brought to a standstill for around fifteen minutes on account of the disruption by the police..The Chief Justice said that she had been studying the records related to the incident, on account of which the Bench was late to sit today. While the Court was expected to sit at around 2.15 pm following the lunch break, the Bench of Chief Justice Banerjee and Justice PT Asha only arrived a few minutes past 3 pm today..It was orally observed that the police cannot be allowed to simply barge into the courts to make arrests in this manner. The Court also suggested that the police be given appropriate sensitisation and training in this regard..Corrigendum: The article had earlier mistakenly mentioned that it was the Additional Advocate General who was present in the Chief Justice’s court. It is the Government Pleader who was present. The error has been rectified.
