People should not be afraid to come to courts: CJI DY Chandrachud

People should not be afraid to approach courts, emphasized Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Sunday while speaking on the occasion of Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court of India. .The CJI expressed his hope that approaching the courts is viewed by people as a fair mechanism and not a last resort. ."Individuals should not be afraid of going to court or see it as a last resort. We hope it is viewed as a fair mechanism to rely on. Sometimes, as a society we may frown upon the judicial institutions, (but) our courts ensure that agreements are reached upon by relying on a solid institution," he said. .The Chief Justice also highlighted the diverse cases that come before the Supreme Court, representing the public's aspirations for essentials such as clean air and water.He underscored the unique position of the Supreme Court, where any citizen can set the constitutional machinery in motion with a simple letter to the Chief Justice. He observed that such communication has evolved from the postcard era to modern, convenient email communications.."Aapka vishwas humara shradha sthan hai aur hum chahte hai aapko kabhi court aane se kabhi darr na lage (Translation: Your trust is our place of faith, and we want you to never fear coming to court)," he added. .The CJI was presiding over the 75th Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court.Addressing a common query about the need for a separate Constitution Day alongside Republic Day, he asserted that the Constitution is not just a legal document but a symbol ingrained in the social life of the Indian nation."When we say we honour the adoption of Constitution, we first honour that the Constitution exists and that it works," he said..Other dignitaries who attended the event included President of India, Draupadi Murmu; Supreme Court judge, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul; Attorney General for India R Venkataramani; Union Minister of State in charge of Law, Arjun Meghwal; and SCBA President Dr Adish C Aggarwala..The event today also saw the launch of the e-SCR portal, where Supreme Court judgments can be accessed, in Hindi. The CJI further spoke about the ongoing efforts to translate judgments into regional languages such as Punjabi, Odia, Bengali, Urdu, Garo, Assamese, Konkani, etc..Moreover, an online portal was also launched to facilitate the seamless communication of judicial orders for the release of prisoners from jail. Named Faster 2.0, the portal is aimed to ensure that judicial orders to release prisoners are immediately complied with and prisoners are released without undue delay. .Supreme Court e-SCR portal launched in Hindi; online portal to ensure prompt release of prisoners also launched
