Only 40 convictions in PMLA cases over last 10 years; acquittals in UAPA cases more than double the convictions

The Central government on Tuesday addressed questions in Parliament regarding cases registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)..As against 5,297 cases registered under the PMLA over the last ten years, only 40 cases resulted in conviction.A similar trend is seen with UAPA cases registered over the last decade; the number of acquittals in such cases are more than twice the number of convictions..Also revealed was the pendency of cases before the National Company Law Tribunals (NCLTs) and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT)..Case registration, conviction, acquittal under UAPA and PMLA in last 10 years.Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi sought details from the Home Ministry regarding cases registered, acquittals and convictions under UAPA and PMLA since 2014.The Ministry revealed that since 2014, 8,719 case registrations, 222 convictions and 567 acquittals were recorded under UAPA. Of these, 9,645 have been pending for less than a year while 10,125 have been pending for more than a year.As per information provided by NCLAT for the same period, a total of 3,019 of cases pending.
