Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has stated that no deaths have been reported due to manual scavenging in the last five years..The question was tabled by Mallikarjun Kharge and Dr L Hanumanthaiah, before the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale.Further, it was also informed that till date, the National Safai Karamcharis Finance & Development Corporation (NSKFDC) has been funded with Rs 192.6 crore, and Rs 211.84 crore has been utilized (including out of unspent balance from previous years)..The Ministry has also revealed that till date, around 66,692 manual scavengers have been identified across the country.The state-wise date is given below:.The Centre had recently stated in Parliament that the states and union territories reported no deaths due to oxygen shortage amid the COVID-19 pandemic..Interestingly, at least three High Courts in the country, Karnataka, Orissa and Madras are hearing cases relating to manual scavenging and death of people who entered man holes to clean the same.
