No convocation yet for the last four batches: NUJS alumni write to CJI DY Chandrachud

Alumni from the batches of 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) have written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who also serves as the Chancellor of the University, requesting that their convocation ceremony be scheduled expeditiously.

According to the letter, the last convocation ceremony was held on October 30, 2022 for the 2019 and 2020 batches, with the one before that taking place in February 2019.

"Since then, there have been no formal convocation ceremonies for the subsequent batches. This delay has caused concern among the graduates, as convocation is a significant milestone that marks the culmination of years of hard work and dedication," the letter adds.

Bar and Bench spoke to Prof. (Dr.) Nirmal Kanti Chakrabarti, Vice Chancellor of WBNUJS, who stated that the CJI's office has been requested to organize the ceremony but is yet to confirm a date.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of the Chancellor's presence, as his signature is required for the degrees to be conferred on the graduates.

As per the letter, convocation ceremonies in other National Law Universities like NLSIU, NALSAR, NLU Delhi, NLIU Bhopal and NLU Jodhpur are held regularly without undue delay.

In that backdrop, the alumni have requested the CJI's office to expedite and facilitate the convocation for batches which graduated from 2021 to 2024.
