He was elected on a Jumhooree Party (JP) ticket. JP is the second largest party in an opposition coalition led by former President Mohammed Nasheed‘s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)..As per their pre-poll agreement, the MDP would have the right to select a Presidential candidate, while the JP would choose his running mate..Ali has been a vociferous critic of the incumbent government..He and three others submitted their nominations for a party primary on Thursday, July 12.
