The National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently dismissed a plea against use of horns by trains resulting in violation of Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules [Ashok Malik & Anr. vs Ministry of Railways & Ors.]..A bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel, Sudhir Agarwal, and Arun Kumar Tyagi, as well as expert members Dr A Senthil Veil and Dr Afroz Ahmed said that generation of noise by railway operations that serve a large number of people cannot be wished away.Thus, the tribunal said that while a noise free environment is necessary, essential activities have to be conducted in the absence of alternative options.."It is a matter of common knowledge that Railway operations serve large number of population and generation of noise in their operations cannot be wished away.
