The National Green Tribunal yesterday banned diesel vehicles more than 10 years old from plying on roads in Kerala’s biggest cities..The Circuit Bench also held that those violating the direction after 30 days from the date of the order would be fined Rs. 5000, to be paid towards a fund created for the betterment of the environment..A bench of Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar and Expert Member BS Sajwan passed the order in an application filed by NGO Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum..It was also held that the state government would not be allowed to register any diesel vehicle with a capacity of 2000cc and above in the interim, save for public transport and local authority vehicles..The state government has been given two weeks to respond. And it seems that the NGT has suggested replacing the diesel vehicles with those that run on CNG. The Bench has asked the state to provide information of availability of CNG for this purpose..Appearing for the applicants were advocates Peter T Thomas, Jacob Abraham and John Numbeli.
