Mob lynching punishable by death, life in jail or seven years in jail in new law which seeks to replace IPC
The new law allows courts to award death, life in jail or jail for 7 years or more in mob lynching cases. Earlier, courts could only impose the death penalty or life imprisonment for murder and not any lesser jail term.
Mob lynching will be made a crime punishable with the death penalty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which could replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) if passed by the parliament.
