A Mumbai court today convicted gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan for the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001..A special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) sentenced Rajan to life imprisonment. Special judge AM Patil held that he was guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code."From the evidence, it is seen that as a gang leader Rajan made conspiracy with the co-accused and killed the deceased because of non payment of extortion amount. The co-accused in the case (already convicted) were working for the organized crime syndicate headed by Rajan", the judge reasoned. "Rajan is found guilty for offences punishable under MCOCA with IPC for murder. He is also found guilty for criminal conspiracy and for acting as a leader of the organized crime syndicate", the judge held. Rajan was also fined a total amount of ₹16 lakhs for the offences committed..Shetty was the owner of the hotel 'Golden Crown' in South Mumbai, and allegedly faced extortion threats from Rajan's gang.Due to such threats, Shetty was provided with security cover by the Mumbai Police. However, two months prior to his murder, the security had been withdrawn.Shetty had purportedly failed to pay the extortion amount and was shot dead outside his office on the first floor of the hotel on May 4, 2001..This is the second case where Rajan has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
