Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra has been elected chairperson of the Bar Council of India (BCI) unopposed for the 6th consecutive term. .It is for the first time in the history of the BCI that someone has been elected unopposed, as the BCI chairperson 6 consecutive times.Previously, Senior Advocate late Ram Jethmalani, had been elected as chairperson for four terms. Senior Advocate S Prabhakaran was elected vice-chairperson for the second consecutive term. He was also elected unopposed. The tenure of the newly elected office-bearers will start from April 17, 2022 and they will hold their respective offices till April 16, 2025..The elections to the BCI were held on February 6, 2022 but the results were kept in sealed covers pursuant to the directions of the Karnataka High Court. This was after the elections came to be challenged before the High Court by one member of the BCI.The High Court had on February 1 refused to stay the elections but directed the BCI not to announce the results of elections and to keep the ballot papers in sealed cover to be produced before the Court on the next date of hearing which was fixed for February 18. Thus, the elections were held with former Chief Justice of Patna High Court, L Narasimha Reddy and former Patna High Court judge Anjana Mishra serving as observer and co-observer for the election process and Senior Advocate DP Dhal presiding over the meeting. When the case before the High Court was taken up on February 18, the petitioner chose to withdrawn the petition after which the BCI proceeded to announce the results.
