The State of Maharashtra will soon get a new Advocate General (AG) after the State Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde accepted the resignation of incumbent AG Ashutosh Kumbhakoni..After former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray resigned in June 30, Kumbhakoni had also put in his resignation as per procedure.However, the resignation was kept pending for consideration.Thereafter, a decision was taken by the Cabinet to keep Kumbhakoni's resignation in abeyance till December 31, 2022.In view of the same, the earlier notification of December 2019 appointing Kumbhakoni as AG continued to remain in force and Kumbhakoni continued as Advocate General.With cabinet now accepting his resignation, the State will get a new AG. .Kumbhakoni was first appointed as AG by Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government on June 7, 2017.He retained the post in December 2019 even as the Uddhav Thackeray led coalition of Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Indian National Congress formed government..His tenure as the Advocate General is the third longest after HM Seervai (17 years) and Ravi Kadam (7 years).
