The Madras High Court Thursday refused to halt the Formula 4 night street race event scheduled to take place in Chennai on August 31 and September 1 this year..A bench of Acting Chief Justice DK Krishnakumar and PB Balaji granted green signal to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and Racing Promotions Private Limited (RPPL) to conduct the race.The Court granted permission after Tamil Nadu Advocate General PS Raman gave an oral undertaking that the race will not be conducted without obtaining the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Homologation Certificate..The Court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by BJP spokesperson ANS Prasad to restrain the SDAT and the private organiser company from conducting the race.Senior counsel V Raghavachari, who appeared for the petitioner, argued that the organisers had created a 3.7 kilometre-long circuit that ran across four arterial public roads in the city. Since the race cars had powerful engines, the organisers must take prior approval from the FIA to ensure the public roads are not damaged, Raghavachari argued.The Advocate General PS Raman and Senior Counsel PR Raman, who appeared for RPPL told the Court that the FIA Homologation Certificate is issued only a day or a few hours before the race..The AG also assured the Court that the race will not be conducted without a certificate from the FIA.At this, the Court said it was “inclined to allow” the event..[Read Order]
