Justice Gaurang Kanth on Friday took oath as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, following his recent transfer from the Delhi High Court..Justice Kanth was administered the oath of office this morning by Calcutta High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam. .In a brief address rendered during the ceremony, Justice Kanth noted that the legacy of the Calcutta High Court spanned over a century. "I feel greater responsibility to carry forward this legacy by ensuring effective dispensation of justice. Today, I undertake to ensure that fruits of justice will reach to the homes of everyone who seek it and reaffirm their faith in the judicial machinery of our nation," he said..The judge added that the judiciary's strength does not lie in the power of an individual judge but the collective wisdom of its members. "I value the role of advocates as officers of the court and I encourage an open and constructive dialogue with them. The Bar and the Bench are two inseparable pillars of legal system working together to uphold justice and rule of law," he said. .The judge also expressed that he was pleased to be back to the eastern side of the country, where he was born. "It will be great to become the judge of this High Court. I was born in the east, studied at Delhi, settled in north and I am back to east to serve the people, where I was born. As I entered the corridors of this court, I was stuck by the monumental colonial structure that serves the symbol of fairness, justice and rule of law," he said..Notably, when the Supreme Court Collegium had first proposed Justice Kanth's transfer out of Delhi, the judge had initially requested that he be transferred to the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan or a High Court in any of the States neighbouring DelhiHowever, the Collegium rejected the request and stood by its decision to transfer the judge to West Bengal. Soon after, the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) registered protest and urged the Collegium to reconsider its proposal. Last Saturday, the Central government notified his transfer to the Calcutta High Court. Following this, lawyers in Delhi abstained from court work for a day, earlier this week, as part of the DHCBA protest.
