The Supreme Court on Wednesday decided to hear the bail plea filed by activist Umar Khalid in connection with the Delhi Riots conspiracy case on July 24. [Umar Khalid v. State of NCT of Delhi].Counsel for Delhi Police asked the Bench to change the date, citing concerns about the heavy workload typically associated with Mondays.To this, a Bench of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh remarked,"We will decide whether the day is heavy or not...this matter will take 1 or 2 minutes," the Court observed..When the Delhi Police sought time to file its reply, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Khalid, said,"The man is inside jail for over two years now...what reply is needed in a bail case now?"Appearing for the Delhi Police, Advocate Rajat Nair replied, "Charge sheets run in thousands of pages...please grant us some reasonable time to file a reply.".The Court was hearing the bail plea filed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student in connection with the Delhi Riots conspiracy case.Khalid was arrested by the Delhi Police in September 2020 and charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He has remained in jail since then.
