Prisoners' Voting Rights: Supreme Court issues notice to Central government on challenge to Section 62(5) of Representation of People Act

The public interest litigation petition was filed more than three years ago in 2019 by one Aditya Prasanna Bhattacharya, who was then a third-year law student at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Central government on a public interest litigation challenging the vires of Section 62(5) of the Representation of People Act which prohibits a person confined in a prison from casting their vote.
