The Supreme Court on Thursday sought the response of OTT platform, Amazon Prime Video and producer of the web series, Mirzapur in a plea by a resident of Mirzapur against the show.

The petition filed by one Sujeet Kumar Singh took exception to the manner in which Mirzapur was portrayed in the web series as a den of terror, crime and other illegal activities.

"The said web series has shown every resident of Mirzapur as goon, vagabond and adulterer. The said web series is filled with nudity, vulgarity and abusive language," the plea said.

The petitioner besides seeking ban on the show also prayed that a pre-screening committee should be set up to examine movies, web series or any other programme which are released directly on OTT platforms and a certificate from Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should be made mandatory before they are released.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde issued notice to Amazon Prime Video, Central government and the producer of the show, Excel Entertainment.

On Mirzapur specifically, the plea said that it tarnishes the cultural and historical image of the Mirzapur city and district.

The web series shows judiciary and district administration as hand in glove with goons and has sexually explicit content, the petitioner alleged.

"It is shown in the series that ladies in Mirzapur are involved in sexual relations with their servants apart from their husband," the petition stated.

Such movies/ web series, the petitioner contended, are in clear violation of Supreme Court dictum to block publication and transmission of obscene material in any electronic from.

The petitioner, therefore, prayed that rules and regulations be framed to regulate content on OTT platforms and ensure that no such movie/ show is released without a certificate from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
