The Supreme Court today directed the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to immediately recommend the name of shooter Naresh Kumar Sharma as an additional participant for the 50m shooting event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020..The Bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, BR Gavai and Krishna Murari passed the order after agreeing to hear the matter, which was mentioned for urgent listing this morning. The Court stated in its order,"Prima facie, the petitioner succeeded and appropriate directions should have been issued to the respondent Committee for the time being...we direct the Committee to immediately recommend name of participant as additional participant or additional entry in the 50 m para shooter category of Paralympics and report compliance by tomorrow.".A petition was moved on behalf of Sharma by Advocates Varun Singh and Nitin Saluja after the Delhi High Court refused to interfere with the non-selection of the five-time Paralympian shooter for the Tokyo Games. The High Court had, however, directed the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Union Ministry of Youth and Sport Affairs to examine the non-selection of Sharma..The petition before the High Court submitted that despite Sharma's stellar achievements, the Selection Committee of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) had failed to take into account his actual average score and had deprived him of an opportunity to participate in the Tokyo Paralympics..It was submitted that the selection of another candidate, Deepak in the 50m rifle competition was done arbitrarily, based on favouritism and lacked transparency..Delhi High Court refuses to interfere with non-selection of Naresh Sharma for Tokyo Paralympics but asks Sports Ministry to examine complaint.[Read Order]
