The executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Wednesday decided to call off tomorrow's general body meeting to vote on resolutions against Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Neeraj Kishan Kaul..An appeal to that effect was also made to the members of the SCBA by the executive committee requesting not to press for the meeting. The decision was taken after an emergent meeting of the executive committee of the SCBA held on Wednesday. On Tuesday, former Attorney General KK Venugopal had written to SCBA president Vikas Singh on Tuesday urging him to withdraw the two resolutions.Further, more than 600 lawyers including 70 Senior Advocates had also written to the SCBA to withdraw the two resolutions.Acknowledging and taking into account Venugopal's letter, Singh in a communication to the bar today, asked that the issue not be precipitated any further.Since a special bench has been constituted to hear the case which lies at the heart of the issue, the resolution regarding solidarity of the bar with the same stands fulfilled, the communication said. "The Executive Committee of SCBA in view of the letter of Shri. KK Venugopal and in the larger interest of the Bar, has authorised the undersigned to write a letter to the Bar to recall the notice for the General Body meeting," it further stated. The Executive Committee of SCBA has no personal agenda against anyone and is only concerned with the stand of the Bar not being diluted before the judges, Singh's communication underscored..One of the two SCBA resolutions in question had sought the issuance of show-cause notices to Sibal and Kaul for disagreeing with the manner in which Singh had mentioned a case before Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on March 2.CJI Chandrachud had rebuked Singh after the senior counsel continued to persist mentioning the plea by the SCBA seeking conversion of land allotted to the Supreme Court as a chamber block for lawyers.Singh had gone on to state that he would even visit the CJI's residence to get the matter heard. In response, the CJI had raised his voice and ordered Singh to leave the court immediately. He asserted that he would not be intimidated, and that Singh would be treated only like any other litigant.Later, Sibal and Kaul had apologised to the CJI for Singh's conduct in court which had not gone down well with the SCBA.The SCBA executive committee had subsequently expressed solidarity with Singh, and proposed two resolutions against the two veteran lawyers.A general body meeting of the SCBA was slated for March 16 at 4 pm to vote on the issue..[Read SCBA letter]
