A plea was filed before Delhi High Court to stop all matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) being played in the national capital amid the fresh wave of COVID-19 pandemic (Karan S Thukral vs UOI)..The plea also sought an inquiry into reasons for prioritising IPL over public health..As per the petitioner, Karan S Thukral and Inder Mohan Singh, it is arbitrary, unreasonable and unjustified action on part of the authorities i.e the Union government, Board of Control For Cricket in India, IPL Governing Council, Delhi and District Cricket Association and the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to conduct the IPL matches in the city. ."In a capital city where the common people are struggling for beds in hospitals, cremation grounds for the last rituals , oxygen cylinders for critical patients and basic medicines, the conduct of IPL matches in Delhi would disturb the mental peace of those who are struggling to save their loved ones," the petition said. .As per the petitioner, the cricket stadium i.e. Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium should instead be used to create "COVID care centres" in order to reduce the plights of the common people.
