The Allahabad High Court on Monday sought the State's response in plea seeking the establishment of more special courts in Uttar Pradesh to adjudicate trials under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 (ITPA)..A Bench comprising of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Piyush Agrawal was hearing a petition which raised concern that human trafficking in the State was on the rise. The petitioner further submitted that due to a lack of courts, adequate steps have not been taken to combat such trafficking..Advocate Raj Kumar Kesari, appearing for the petitioner, told the Court that even during the period when COVID-19 restrictions were in place, such trafficking was rampant. .A study made by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes was also placed on record, wherein Chapter- 6A relates human trafficking and its impact in different States of the country..While deeming it appropriate to have a response from the State in the matter, the Court has now directed the government to file a counter affidavit..The petition has been listed to be taken up next on January 18, 2021..Read the order here:
