The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has stated that its search committee has shortlisted 13 lady lawyers found suitable for appointment as High Court judges..Soon after Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana called for 50 percent reservation for women in judiciary, SCBA President Vikas Singh in a press release stated that SCBA is sure that “steps, if not already taken would be taken immediately and as a first step the recommended names would be sent for consideration especially the names of lady lawyers.”"The CJI being the head of the institution and the appointments being done by the Collegium system, he can easily provide for more and more representation of women lawyers," the press release said..CJI Ramana had called for the 50% reservation for women in the judiciary at a felicitation event organized by the lady lawyers association of the Supreme Court..However, Singh has claimed in the press release that SCBA received complaints from several lady lawyers regularly practicing before the Supreme Court that they were neither informed nor invited to the felicitation.The press release also said that the CJI should meet the executive committee of the SCBA more frequently. "Through several letters, we have been requesting for a meeting which has not been granted to us," the press statement said..Earlier it was informed that Search Committee constituted by the SCBA had shortlisted names of 48 Supreme Court lawyers to be considered for elevation to 17 different High Courts.
