The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to grant bail to two police officers, P Raghu Ganesh and S Sridhar, accused in the Sathankulam custodial death case in which one P Jayaraj and his son, J Bennicks were killed..The Bench of Justices Vineet Saran and Dinesh Maheshwari while declining to grant bail observed that relief "cannot be granted at this stage.".The Sathankulam case involves allegations of police brutality, a mechanical remand by the judicial magistrate and inadequate medical treatment leading to the death of Jayaraj and Bennix while in police custody..The two deceased were arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police on June 19, 2020 alleging violation of the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. They were allegedly tortured and sexually assaulted inside the police station leading to their deaths. A judicial inquiry into their deaths under Section 176, CrPC, is being conducted by the Judicial Magistrate No. 1, Kovilpatti. The investigation was earlier being handled by the Crime Branch-CID until the CBI took over the probe earlier last year.
