The Supreme Court on Monday observed that retired district judges were not being given enough pension..A Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra sought the assistance of Attorney General (AG) for India R Venkataramani in a case dealing with judges' pension."It is a very serious issue, Attorney General. Retired district judges being paid 19,000 to 20,000 after such long service is not proper. Imagine it is not then they can suddenly jump to private practice. They are really disabled," said CJI Chandrachud..The CJI further stated that some High Court judges were not being paid pension after retirement."Some High Court judges are also not being paid. Look into this," said the CJI."I will look into the this, but it must some High Court judges, not all," the AG replied..During an earlier hearing in the same case, the Bench had underlined the importance of enabling judges to live a life of dignity upon retirement, as they spend a significant portion of their working lives in service to the judicial institution."Judicial officers spent the largest part of working life in service of the judicial institution and do not take up benefits which may be available to the other members of Bar and thus State must ensure that judicial officers upon retirement must live a life of dignity," the CJI had said..In November, the Court had warned that contempt of court action would be taken against Chief Secretaries of states that do not comply with its earlier directions to pay pension to district judges at revised rates from July 1 onwards..Supreme Court warns States of contempt action if order to pay district judges revised pension is not followed
