Plea on plight of mentally-challenged persons stranded on TN roadsides: Madras HC calls for report

The Madras High Court on Monday ordered the State Commissioner for the Differently-Abled to investigate and take mitigating action to secure food and shelter to destitute mentally-challenged persons (M Karpagam v. The Chief Secy to Government of Tamil Nadu and Ors).

A Division Bench of Justices MM Sundresh and R Hemalatha was hearing a petition seeking a direction to the State to ensure board and lodging to the destitute mentally-challenged stranded on roadsides and pavements in Tamil Nadu.

The petition also urges for such persons to be sheltered in Government homes after conducting a COVID-19 test.
