The Delhi High Court on Friday took suo motu cognisance of reports that a shelter for homeless single women in the national capital is left without food supply and its inmates are now being forced to beg on the streets. .It was informed that the shelter has a total of 60 homeless single women, including elderly and people with disabilities as well as 17 children. The shelter is run by Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). A Division Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad took cognisance of the issue after Justice C Hari Shankar forwarded a copy of an article published in The Times of India on Friday. The bench ordered the Delhi government to ensure supply of food to the shelter and not to discontinue the same without court's permission. "It has been brought to the notice of this Court that at present the Government is providing food to all night shelters. It is directed that the practice of providing food to all night shelters, including the night shelter which is the subject matter of the present PIL will continue and the same will not be discontinued without the leave of the Court," the court said. The bench further said that Akshaya Patra Foundation which was earlier providing food to all the night shelters will continue to do the same and the similar process of payment, which was continuing earlier will continue. .The court has appointed Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan amicus curiae in the case.
