More than 20 lakh cases disposed of in 2nd National Lok Adalat

The 2nd National Lok Adalat for the year 2022 was recently held under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) across nine States of the country. .The programme was held in Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa, Andaman & Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karanataka, Puncucherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana on June 25 and 26 under the aegis of Supreme Court judge Justice UU Lalit. A total of 20,96,854 cases, including 14,26,751 pending cases and 6,70,103 cases in pre-litigation stage were disposed of, a press release issued by NALSA said. The total monetary value of the cases settled stood at ₹3534.59 crores.The cumulative figure of cases disposed of in the Lok Adalats in the second quarter of the current calender year is at 95,75,743, including 28,71,919 lakh pending and 67,03,824 lakh pre-litigation cases. The total monetary value settled so far is at ₹9413.62 crores, the press release added.NALSA organises National Lok Adalats every quarter to provide easy, economical, informal access to Justice to litigants, specially those from the poorer sections of society. Lok Adalats take up pending civil cases, compoundable criminal cases and matrimonial cases excluding divorce. They are seen as alternate dispute resolution mechanism at a time when courts are burdened with high pendency. The aim is to lessen the burden on regular courts by 'targeting pending cases as well as those in pipeline.In a miscellaneous criminal case disposed of in the recent Lok Adalat in Karnataka, a poignant scene transpired when octogenarian litigants were reunited after a near-50-year separation period.
