The Manipur High Court has directed release of journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem who was jailed under the National Security Act (NSA) for posts cow urine after a BJP leader had died of Covid-19 (Elangbam Ranjita v. State of Manipur & Anr)..The order was passed by a bench of Chief Justice PV Sanjay Kumar and Justice KH Nobin Singh on a letter petition moved by wife of Wangkhem.The High Court is also likely to consider plea for awarding compensation to Wangkhem.After Manipur BJP chief, Saikhom Tikendra Singh died of COVID, Wangkhem had put up a Facebook post which read "Cow dung and cow urine did not work. Groundless argument. Tomorrow I will eat fish."He was later arrested and slapped with NSA charges on a complaint filed by BJP State Vice President Usham Deban Singh and General Secretary P Premananda Meetei. Interestingly, Wangkhem is one of the Petitioners who has challenged Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (Sedition) before the Supreme Court. .[Sedition] These are the 7 petitions in Supreme Court challenging Section 124A IPC .On Monday this week, the Supreme Court had ordered the release of Manipuri activist Erendro Leichombam, who was booked under the National Security Act (NSA) along with Wangkhem for a similar Facebook post criticizing Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for advocating cow-dung and cow-urine as cures for COVID.."Can't keep him in jail even for a day:" Supreme Court orders release of activist charged for FB post criticising use of Cow dung as COVID cure.A Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah had said in that case that Leichombam cannot be kept in jail even for a day for such an act."He cannot be kept in jail even for a day.
