Man accused of leaving Leela Hotel without paying ₹24 lakh bill sent to police custody for 2 days

Mahamed Sharif, the man accused of posing as an employee of royal family of Abu Dhabi and staying in Delhi's Leela Hotel for over three months without paying the bills, was remanded to police custody for two days by a Delhi court..Sharif was presented before Duty Magistrate Shivangi Vyas.His counsel told the court he was illegally arrested in the middle of night from his home in Karnataka and was not given the legal representation when the application for transit remand was considered.It was also stated that the police officials failed to adhere to the guidelines for arrest and that he did not steal any items therefore, no recovery is to be effected.However, after considering the arguments, the magistrate sent him to police custody. "Considering the fact that the recovery of the case property i.e. the stolen articles are yet to be effected, accused Mahamed Sharif be remanded to PC for 02 days, to be produced before court concerned on 24.01.2023. He be medically examined as per rules," the court ordered. .The Delhi Police had arrested 41-year-old Sharif from Karnataka on January 19 on allegations that he stayed at the five-star hotel from August 1, 2022 to November 20, 2022 and left without paying the bill. He was presented before the local court which granted the police four days transit remand. Delhi Police has said that Sharif stole silverware and other items from the hotel and now owes nearly ₹24 lakh. According to reports, the accused checked into the hotel using a fake business card and introduced himself as a functionary of the UAE government. A first information report (FIR) was registered against Sharif at Delhi's Sarojini Nagar Police station after a complaint was filed by the hotel staff.He has been charged with Sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).State was represented through Additional Public Prosecutor.
